Hell’s Kitchen

I’m totally obsessed with Hell’s Kitchen. Its compulsive, and no, it’s not the delicious food or even Marco ,who despite looking like Yasser Arafat, has given a whole new catwalk look to the humble tea towel. Its Grant and Anthea. ‘Granthea‘, ‘Grantheagate‘ or even plain ol‘ Mr and Mrs Bovey. Love them or hate them, and I’m in neither camp, they completely fascinate me as a couple.

But are they really a couple? Clearly, they are devoted, but to me (cynic that I am), they seem more brother and sister, mother and son, father and daughter than just plain old Mr and Mrs. Anthea seems to skip between being Grant’s mother or his lover, but somehow there is a desperate void of ‘day to day married life’ in between. I have very little knowledge, or interest, in their past financial or career success, but they’ve obviously done OK one way or another. But this desperate need for affirmation is quite extraordinary, and polarised last night by the sharp contrast between lovely Danielle’s daughter (aged 7) saying goodbye to her Mummy, and Anthea’s sobbing at Grant’s sacking. Is it me? Sure, it’s hard work and they must be exhausted, but really, they’re hardly going off to battle, are they?

My money is on Linda, elegant and gracious at 66 who remains cool under pressure and just giggles at any criticism. Ade really makes me laugh too, but under that relaxed persona is a very driven guy – I think he has a master agenda. Danielle may not be the crispiest cookie in the tin, but her understated and gentle style and approach, not to mention looking stunning at all times, and with no make-up, has certainly won over Marco . I don’t think Bruce has the personality to go through, but I admire Naomi (who is she? never heard of her!) for her tenacity.

But I have a sneaking suspicion that Anthea, free of Grant, may well blossom. Roll on 9.00 pm tonight!
