I don’t claim to have the insider fashion knowledge of my learned friend Cupcake, but I like to think I know what looks good. I believe some of the world’s best fashion is found in Britain, a lot of it on our humble High Street. I also don’t subscribe to the idea that everyone in Europe is effortlessly stylish – I’ve seen some pretty dreadful sights on holiday abroad and I bet you have too, but one thing I would acknowledge is that Europeans know how to dress for the weather.
One ray of sunshine in this country, and everyone is out in their summer clothes. OK, so you want to embrace the good weather and why not, but please, just think before you leave home. Last year’s white linen trousers – and nothing wrong with wearing anything from last year, or the last 10 years come to that if its CLEAN and at least ironed – don’t look that good if you’re still wearing your novelty ‘Father Christmas’ knickers – yes, I’ve seen them this very morning! Or almost worse still, one of those cheese wire thongs that ride over the top of the waistband and just make you look grubby and very cheap.
Flip flops are fine – but think nails. Not the fungal, crusty look, but polished and preened. And no, it doesn’t take an expensive pedicure, just a bit of time and care whilst you’re watching telly – and lots and lots of moisturiser. Or better still, vaseline – but wear socks after or you will be cursing from your crutches for days.
There’s loads of really good fake tan out there now – healthier than sun bathing and better than chicken skin. Remember to shave your armpits daily, and the best investment is some really good flesh coloured underwear. Coloured lacy bras under white clothes look cute and sexy if you’re young, slim and effortlessly stylish but if you’re not, don’t go there…
And probably the best advice anyone gave me is as good as it feels to buy a small size, clothes that skim rather than cling are much, much more flattering. White and light fabrics aren’t the most flattering, so we need all the help we can get to get it right.
Enough of this, I’m going outside…
