Saturday nights won’t be the same once Strictly finishes tomorrow. As summer wanes and gallops headlong into autumn, The X Factor and Strictly are two of the few bright stars in the dark winter weekend skies. World summits in Copenhagen, collapsing Scottish airlines, BA in turmoil and tragic stories from Afghanistan all highlight how we need light entertainment, and although critics will always love to knock such programmes, it’s interesting to see how they can unite a country where world and religious leaders fail.
