Sometimes (in fact often) you read something in the paper which really makes you mad. This week it had to be that our favourite high street chemist Boots has, allegedly, stopped issuing loyalty points for powdered baby milk. This apparently has come from on high, ie Brussels. The thinking behind this is that ‘breast is best’, and awarding loyalty points on powdered milk may encourage mothers to bottle feed.
What on earth do people take women for? It’s hard enough being a new parent with the dreaded ‘mummy mafia’ watching your every move, extra inch and stolen malteser, without now being penalised for making a decision which quite likely is for medical reasons. When I had a young baby, and didn’t breast feed, I was drummed out of the brownies at my first mother and baby group and made to feel more than inadequate. People are so quick to judge and very reluctant to listen to the whole story, and now add to this extra pressure from retailers.
Is this progress, or politics?
