Back in action

I’m just back from a wonderful week away and now, three days later, have only just surfaced from the washing/ironing/sorting of e-mails/phoning family/paying bills/clearing up of dead wasps (and worse) that have found their way into my formerly spotless house (how dare they?!)/weeding the garden/mowing the lawn (well OK, not exactly me mowing) and re-stocking the fridge.  Not sure why I did the latter as I made the very, very big mistake of weighing myself on my first morning back.  Depressing or what?  How can so much hard work be undone in just seven short days?

I read Cupcake’s posting on her chat with her hairdresser on all things diet related, and thought about the long, leggy blonde aged 24.  I hate her already (the blonde, not Cupcake) but the real shame is that I’m sure the said blonde beauty has no idea how lucky she is and how in several years time – that believe me will just fly past quicker than this week’s election – she will be longing to turn the clocks back.   George Bernard Shaw famously said ‘Youth is wasted on the young’.  How right he was.  Of all my regrets,  not enjoying the huge advantages of youth in terms of celllulite free legs, unlined skin and breasts that stay put after I’ve taken off my bra are probably my greatest.  Yes, of course there are work opportunities missed, relationships where I would have done things differently and life changing decisions which make the aforementioned vanity issues seem totally irrelevant, but without confidence and self belief, whatever opportunites are presented are often wasted.  It’s all about how you feel about yourself inside, not how others perceive you.  And the great thing about getting older is getting to know yourself and accepting the good with the bad, laughing at your own many mistakes and treating regrets and bad decisions as lessons to be learnt.  So just live life and ditch the scales, the magnifying mirrors and the self-criticism.  If you feel good about yourself then that will show in abundance.
