I’ve just watched the first episode of the new Masterchef series. What has happened? Is it the Apprentice, or the X Factor? Painful auditions, emotional stories and seriously deconstructed dishes seem a very long way from good food on a plate. I know producers will want to keep the series fresh, but the contestants seemed in many cases to be less about the cooking and more about the look and lifestyle. Or is it me? One of my strongest childhood memories is that of my grandmother and her handbag. Together, they were the perfect married couple, inseparable, always co-ordinated and never out of sync. Where my grandmother went, her handbag followed. It is often said the way to measure any society is by the way it treats its most vulnerable. We are living in difficult times and we are all aware of our current economic situation, but the Government’s impending cuts for people with disabilities are utterly disgraceful. Tonight’s the last episode of Midsomer Murders with John Nettles as Inspector Barnaby. Don’t ask my why a series with more dead bodies (we call it Midsomer Massacres in my house) than in the history of any mortuary can have such a strangely warm and comforting feel.
