How many times have you googled a small business or shop and can only find the address and phone number… I am truly amazed that so many small businesses do not have web sites. When Marigold and I had the idea of starting our web site, hangupsandhandbags, it was to share our ‘finds’ with like minded people, of course you can’t get it right for every individual but we try to bring new ideas to our readers. We love Vintage, fashion and homeware and get great pleasure in finding quirky little sites that are not ‘high street’ Marigold owns the vintage Chanel bag on … Read More »

It’s countdown for the last episode – in this series at least – of my current favourite programme, The Hour. Don’t forget to tune in tonight, BBC 2 at 9.00 pm. Tuesday evenings just won’t be the same – thank goodness for the Borgias on Saturday. marigold x
Heard earlier today…. There comes a time in your life when you realise who really matters – who never did, who doesn’t anymore and who always will. Don’t worry about people from the past, there’s a reason they didn’t make it to your future. marigold x

In today’s uncertain economic climate, there is scarcely anything one could call a safe bet. Prices are on the up and investments are in decline, which made me start thinking what the word investment means to me. Maths was never my strong subject at school, though I’ve certainly an A* in justifying spending money. And what matters when I spend money – and I’m talking extras and luxuries here, not essentials- is how it makes me feel. Forget the sales assistant who tries to convince you that a certain fabulous piece of clothing is a good investment. If you only wear it once or twice, … Read More »

Cupcake and I are eagerly anticipating the launch of Mary Portas of Queen of Shops fame own fashion collection when it hits the High Street this week. OK, so maybe not your or my High Street, but the House of Fraser store in London’s Oxford Street. Mary is a great lady – she says it as it is and has her own very definite sense of style. Images I’ve seen so far promise a great palette with pzazz. Bold and confident with clean unfussy lines, great jewel colours and the sort of clothes that you just throw on yet you know will always look right. Fashion as sharp … Read More »
Sex, passion, beauty, twisted plots, palaces, incest, intrigue, family feuds and moral dilemmas. Add sword fighting, manipulative women and acres of sumptuous velvet drapes and dresses, and this is pure TV heaven. Think Dallas meets Ancient Rome with Jeremy Irons as the JR of the Vatican. Forget the unrealistic Disneyesque street sets, just soak up the drama. Saturday BBC2 at 9.00 pm. Compelling. marigold x interesting clip on The Borgias Clip (The Art of War: Neil Jordan) http://www.imdb.com/video/cbs/vi174300441/
After last week’s episode which felt more like 24 – hours that is – slow and somewhat banal, I’m pleased to say this week’s episode was a good’un with things hotting up both in the bedroom and on the cutting room floor. Ben Whishaw continues to shine – so well cast and looking so 1950′s he’ll start to wish he was he that was his vintage. And Anna Chancellor is as fabulous as ever. Crisper dialogue, a faster pace and the plot thickens - is there a Soviet Agent inside the BBC? It’s all very Midsomer Murders – easy on the eye, lovely sets and pretty improbable plots. Every time I hear the … Read More »

Whatever sort of relationship you have or had with your mother, its one of those undeniable facts that things we were told when we were young stick – even if they drive us mad. As a child I felt all I was told by my mother was the gospel truth and at a very young and tender age I never thought to question it. Perhaps thats the real sign of being an adult – realising that parents can be no more certain of life than their children and respecting them for it. There’s nothing Cupcake and I like more than making our lists, so here … Read More »

WEDDINGS, BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES Marigold and I have had a very busy time, both of us had our birthdays (2 weeks apart) we have also had family birthdays, one wedding and a wedding anniversary… a very joyous but expensive few weeks. This is all far outweighed by the happiness that these get togethers bring, surrounded by loved one’s, both friends and family…. or is it? is it really all happy clappy like the movies or the adverts! It really makes you think about family ties, sometimes it is really hard to keep everyone one happy when organising a big knees up… we know step-kids, step mums and dads, … Read More »
