THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL

Last night I went to see The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.  I could hardly miss a film about a hotel named after me, could I? With a stellar cast and wonderful shots of Jaipur and Udaipur, it could hardly disappoint.  The film was a tuk tuk ride of gentleness, humour and emotion – a group of elderly people looking for something in later life that opportunities and  finances would not allow in this country.  Fabulous performances by everyone, and I’m sure you’ve heard the cast list – Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton, Tom Whittaker, Dev Patel, Ronald Pickup and … Read More »

MARIE COLVIN

It was shocking to hear the tragic news yesterday of Marie Colvin, the Sunday Times journalist who was killed whilst reporting in Syria. Marie was the most professional of women, brave and bold, always balanced and fair, utterly readable and one who always looked for the human side of a story to convey her message.   Whilst this is a tragic time for her family and friends, Marie’s death is a real loss to journalism which has of late received its share of very negative press.  We are so used to criticising the press for intrusion and blanket celebrity coverage we forget at times the … Read More »

ARE YOU A FLIPPER OR A TOSSER?

Today is pancake day.  It’s lent tomorrow so all the more reason to bring on the maple syrup and let your soul sing. Like sandwiches, pancakes are an excuse to let your imagination run riot and as Shrove Tuesday is but once a year, lets waive the diet and waistline and go for it. Anything goes, and go they usually do, however many you make.  And don’t forget the first two or three are always messed up in the pan (cooks perks, shame to throw them away…….) Traditional I know, but I still rate lemon and sugar as my number one favourite.  This would … Read More »

SELFRIDGES & CO, MR DANIEL MAXWELL GOOD JOB

SELFRIDGES & CO, MR DANIEL MAXWELL, GOOD JOB. Last week a friend of ours rang Selfridges, the Armani counter, looking for a new mascara and was helped by a wonderful guy called Daniel Maxwell, he was witty, kind and even gave tips about the requested mascaras. Sometimes when you ring the big high street shops you can get a very bored voice who has no interest in what you require at all…they take the money at the end of the month … or you can get a chirrpy girlie who has no idea about what you desire and has no ‘superviser’ there to help…”call … Read More »

HEAR HEAR

Well said Cupcake on your thoughts re scurvy versus curvy on the catwalk.  We all know size mini minus isn’t a good look yet season after season it’s a look wheeled out like the wonky supermarket trolley.  We know it’s not right but we still have to go along with it.  Like you I just love that warm and wonderful Ralph Lauren look.  How can someone always get it so right?  However many designs I secretly covet, there is always a season where the designer seems to go off piste but with Ralph you always know where you are.  He always grabs the mood … Read More »

ALFRE WOODARD WEARS RANI ZAKHEM

This morning I was listening to radio 4… yep I hold my hands up I loved it… it was a discussion about LFW (london fashion week) I pricked up my ears at one point when the chat turned to the models…14/15yr olds wear size dot, the point was raised ‘why do the designers use this sample size for the runway? The high street put their spin on the designs to make them wearable but if you have ‘curves’ and most of us I guess do… why oh why do it? I know this is an age old question, I love looking but know my … Read More »

HEARTS AND FLOWERS

I love Valentine’s Day.  I can say that because I’m lucky enough to have the love of a good man, but I’m well aware of the pain that can befall those who are recently bereaved, separated, those who have just never found their soul mate or live alone due to circumsance rather than choice.  And the agony of loveless teenage years where Valentines Day’s come and go with no acknowledgement is immeasurable.   I lived through some of those years and vowed then to be kind to myself, rather than be miserable, and started my own Valentine’s ritual.  This is not a  desperate measure like … Read More »

OK SO IT’S VALENTINES DAY AGAIN

I do love a good Valentines day… and as many a subtle hint dropped I don’t always get what I wish for…my OH has some great ideas of his own so I am never disappointed. I always get a gorgeous card and we have a thing about NOT getting red roses that break the bank, one year we got each other a small tree, (idea was we would watch it grow together, couple of old romantics!) the year we had our little CCF he gave me a diamond, small but perfectly formed, it is always round my neck and something I treasure because of … Read More »
