It’s Chelsea Flower Show’s 100th birthday this year but she is showing no signs of ageing. Still my favourite time of year, this special week of May is a treasure trove of new discoveries, be they plants, designs or accessories. In many ways Chelsea is the London Fashion Week for garden designers – a catwalk of opportunities to show ideas and send a message to the wider world, be it political environmental or plain sentimental. However cutting edge and innovative some hard landscaping or sculpture might be, who could ever tire of the intoxicating scent of a rose in bloom, or the beauty of … Read More »
If you can start the day without caffeine, If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it, If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time, If you can take criticism and blame without resentment, If you can conquer tension without medical help, If you can relax without alcohol, If you can sleep without the aid of drugs, Then You Are Probably The Family Dog (And you thought I was going … Read More »

Marigold is back – and heartfelt thanks to Cupcake for dealing with the Hangups and sourcing the best Handbags. Where have I been? Nowhere sadly to warrant a golden tan and relaxed aura, but sometimes life just gets in the way of living and a date with a deadline took over. It’s been a funny old year already -I am sure I am not alone in thinking we’re all just beginning to emerge from the longest winter imaginable. Fortunately there’s been some good TV with Broadchurch and I’m loving Endeavour, but the sun of the last few days has been the greatest joy imaginable … Read More »

A very happy Christmas from Cupcake and Marigold. We’ve had an exciting year – one of emotional highs, unexpected demands, impossible deadlines and life affirming experiences, and now we’re ready to put our feet up for Christmas, if not literally, at least in our minds. Whatever you are doing this Christmas, wherever you are and whether you choose to celebrate with loved ones or just close the door on the world outside, we wish you a warm and peaceful holiday. At last, a victory for common sense. Congratulations to the Home Secretary Theresa May for deciding Asperger’s sufferer Gary McKinnon will not be extradited for hacking into computers at the Pentagon. This whole sorry story would have potentially ended in tragedy, had it not been for the brave and consistent battle put up by Gary’s mother, Janis Sharp, whose love for her son and endless courage defied the red tape, politics and beaurocracy surrounding this case. Alas, it is all too often the families of those most vulnerable in society who have to battle endlessly for justice. Janis’ persistance will give hope to many … Read More »
My husband wants a dog. I don’t want a dog. My husband wants a dog and says we will have to fence the garden. I don’t want a dog and I don’t want to fence the garden. My husband wants a dog and says we have to make the garden really secure, maybe make some changes. I don’t want a dog. I’ve had dogs, and as much as I love them, they mean work. This sounds like expensive chaos. My husband wants a dog, says we have to make the garden really safe and may have to change the terrace. The terrace? Where is … Read More »
Many congratulations to Rory McIlroy on his Ryder Cup success yesterday, and for making the last minute dash to the course in an unmarked police car with only minutes to go to Tee off time before being disqualified. For the first time ever, I found golf exciting! marigold xx
Who are the disabled parking police who think it is their right to criticise who does, and doesn’t park in the designated disabled bays? I refer not to traffic wardens or officials, but to members of the public who at the first opportunity to interfere, ask if people have a right to park in the designated spaces. Today I drove a severely disabled man to the supermarket in his especially adapted vehicle. I parked in the disabled bay but before I could even turn off the engine or display his blue badge, an elderly woman mouthed ‘You don’t look disabled’ at me. What on … Read More »

As someone who has bemoaned the lack of sunshine and warm weather this summer, I have just put on a pair of long, leather boots to keep September’s chilly mornings at bay, and it feels absolutely wonderful! Socks, I love you. How have I suffered ballet flats and open toe sandals so long? marigold x

What an amazing summer of television – and lets face it, how often do we ever say that? Who cared about the rain?! We started with the buzz of the Queen’s Jubilee, we galloped through documentaries with the pace of Chariots of Fire into the sublime Olympics and a whole nation united with the cheers and tears of heroic pursuits. No sooner had we all come down from the closing ceremony, then it was focus Paralympics, with Lucy Gannon’s ‘The Best of Men’ being one of the most informative, educational, emotional and entertaining programmes on TV this year. Sir Jimmy Saville brought Stoke Mandeville … Read More »

I’m totally hooked on the Olympics. The wave of optimism and good cheer which has overtaken the country has been a tonic for us all, regardless of whether sport is your thing. Sport has never been mine, but I’m absolutely at one with the stories, emotions, heartbreak and elation and the respect held for such admirable achievements. It has also been so refreshing to listen to such humility and grace from the competitors whether victors or those reeling with disappointment. Footballers, take note. But why do our commentators ask such inane questions as ‘how do you feel?’ when many, many hard and relentless years of training and … Read More »
Not the book. My hair. If only a tiny amount of the money generated by the phenomenal success of this middle class ‘Mummy porn’ novel could be paid straight into my hairdresser’s account I’d be well and truly on the way to blonde heaven. Its not that my hair is going that grey, just that between highlight sessions, the roots have totally lost their bed/beach hair tousled I want to be Elle Macpherson look, and are now more akin to being swathed in a four point spotted handkerchief. The trouble is not in the grey, its in the shades. Once totally grey, a forgiving … Read More »
One swallow doesn’t make a summer, but I have three. Three beautiful birds, each with a sparkly diamante eye, suspended from a silver chain and ready to adorn my neck once I brave the weather and take off a few layers. My new necklace, a fabulous present from a very special friend, comes from Tatty Devine. You only have to hear the name to know you are in for a treat and something way off piste. Original and stylish designs with more than a hint of wit, my necklace is a first for me but I have no doubts the brand will be on … Read More »
In today’s world of e-mail, text and the internet how refreshing to read yesterday that the fountain pen is making a comeback. Sales are well up on previous years, and retailers put this down to the return to traditional values in times of economic uncertainty. Whether your budget stretches to a Montblanc or a Graf von Faber-Castell is another matter, you heard it here first, a fountain pen is the cool and classy girl’s must have accessory of the moment. It’s ironic highlighting this trend on a blog, brought to you via cyberspace, but I bet there isn’t a single one of you who … Read More »
Elvis Costello sang ‘I don’t want to go to Chelsea’ but he doesn’t know what he was missing. Not only did Chelsea Football Club pave the way for celebration by winning Sunday night’s Champion’s League, but the sun – at last – is shining. Blue definitely is the colour, and it’s all over the catwalk too. And no doubt there will be plenty of blue at Chelsea Flower Show which blossoms from today. Open to RHS members from tomorrow, Tuesday, and the general public from Thursday, this week marks the real start to our spring – or is it summer? Nurserymen and designers from … Read More »
