I’m in love with navy blue. All shades of blue in fact, but navy has become my default setting. It’s taken me a long time to get around to this way of thinking as, denim aside, navy has never been my colour of choice. Like so much in life, it all goes back to my childhood. School uniform to be precise. One highly unflattering box pleated navy skirt in wool as course as a hair shirt, topped off – of should I say bottomed out – with navy blue interlock extra large knickers with reinforced gusset. Caught in a shower, and the wool took on all … Read More »
We’re living in unprecedented times. There is scarcely anyone who is untouched by the current harsh economic situation and we are all having to do our bit to tighten our belts and budgets and try to save what little we can to protect our very uncertain futures. If one was to read every dark head line it would be all to easy to be drawn into a sea of depression and the one thing I belive we all need right now is the confidence in ourselves that all will come good – though clearly from what the experts say, not for some considerable time. What … Read More »
Nothing makes me feel as good as the sun on my skin and the feeling of warmth from the inside out. Our recent heatwave has been wonderful, but even though I’ve loved getting out my white jeans that barely sore the light of day during our so called summer, even during the last few days I’ve been sneaking a peak in my wardrobe and looking lovingly at the tweed and cosy knits that await me this autumn – and of course the boots. Oh the boots! My great consolation of summer’s end is slipping on my socks and renewing my relationship with my favourite boots, and … Read More »

I’m some way off 87, but if I had half the spirit and humour of the lady below who wrote the letter to her bank manager in I’d be forever grateful. marigold x 87 year old ladys letter to the bank Shown below, is an actual letter that was sent to a bank by an 86 year old woman. The bank manager thought it amusing enough to have it published in the New York Times. Dear Sir: I am writing to thank you for bouncing my check with which I endeavored to pay my plumber last month. By my calculations, three nanoseconds must … Read More »

It’s just 52 hours until Downton Abbey returns to our screens this Sunday, 9.00 pm ITV. Whatever your plans this weekend, let that thought make you smile. Marigold x
Did anyone else see ‘ Who do you think you are’ last night? It featured Emilia Fox and included the best 5 minutes in television for a long, long time, namely the scene where Emilia visited her great aunts in Cornwall. What a pair of utterly amazing ladies – pure Downton Abbey. Where was Dame Maggie Smith? Catch it now on BBC i player. Wednesday night, BBC 1 at 9.00 pm marigold x

It’s cold, it’s wet, it’s miserable. Summer is well and truly over, financial markets are in disarray, Cupcake’s hard drive is on the blink and she’s lost all e-mail and internet contact and the world is an uncertain place. But the shining light on the horizon is that Downton Abbey is back – don’t forget, ITV, Sunday 18th September at 9.00. Pure TV heaven. If only for an hour, the world can go away. Marigold x
Go to any beauty counter and you will be overwhelmed by the choice of eye make up. Shadows of every hue, creams of every texture, kohl pencil to give you that exotic look, eye liner for dramatic effect and lashings and lashings of mascara in every colour of the rainbow and every size brush, wand and comb. Phew, its exhausting just thinking of it. But what of the eyebrows? Yes, there are pencils and a powder to apply with a brush, but that seems to be scant attention to what really are fabulous features and really enhance the face in every way. Would you create … Read More »
It’s countdown for the last episode – in this series at least – of my current favourite programme, The Hour. Don’t forget to tune in tonight, BBC 2 at 9.00 pm. Tuesday evenings just won’t be the same – thank goodness for the Borgias on Saturday. marigold x
Heard earlier today…. There comes a time in your life when you realise who really matters – who never did, who doesn’t anymore and who always will. Don’t worry about people from the past, there’s a reason they didn’t make it to your future. marigold x

In today’s uncertain economic climate, there is scarcely anything one could call a safe bet. Prices are on the up and investments are in decline, which made me start thinking what the word investment means to me. Maths was never my strong subject at school, though I’ve certainly an A* in justifying spending money. And what matters when I spend money – and I’m talking extras and luxuries here, not essentials- is how it makes me feel. Forget the sales assistant who tries to convince you that a certain fabulous piece of clothing is a good investment. If you only wear it once or twice, … Read More »

Cupcake and I are eagerly anticipating the launch of Mary Portas of Queen of Shops fame own fashion collection when it hits the High Street this week. OK, so maybe not your or my High Street, but the House of Fraser store in London’s Oxford Street. Mary is a great lady – she says it as it is and has her own very definite sense of style. Images I’ve seen so far promise a great palette with pzazz. Bold and confident with clean unfussy lines, great jewel colours and the sort of clothes that you just throw on yet you know will always look right. Fashion as sharp … Read More »
Sex, passion, beauty, twisted plots, palaces, incest, intrigue, family feuds and moral dilemmas. Add sword fighting, manipulative women and acres of sumptuous velvet drapes and dresses, and this is pure TV heaven. Think Dallas meets Ancient Rome with Jeremy Irons as the JR of the Vatican. Forget the unrealistic Disneyesque street sets, just soak up the drama. Saturday BBC2 at 9.00 pm. Compelling. marigold x interesting clip on The Borgias Clip (The Art of War: Neil Jordan) http://www.imdb.com/video/cbs/vi174300441/
After last week’s episode which felt more like 24 – hours that is – slow and somewhat banal, I’m pleased to say this week’s episode was a good’un with things hotting up both in the bedroom and on the cutting room floor. Ben Whishaw continues to shine – so well cast and looking so 1950′s he’ll start to wish he was he that was his vintage. And Anna Chancellor is as fabulous as ever. Crisper dialogue, a faster pace and the plot thickens - is there a Soviet Agent inside the BBC? It’s all very Midsomer Murders – easy on the eye, lovely sets and pretty improbable plots. Every time I hear the … Read More »
Whatever sort of relationship you have or had with your mother, its one of those undeniable facts that things we were told when we were young stick – even if they drive us mad. As a child I felt all I was told by my mother was the gospel truth and at a very young and tender age I never thought to question it. Perhaps thats the real sign of being an adult – realising that parents can be no more certain of life than their children and respecting them for it. There’s nothing Cupcake and I like more than making our lists, so here … Read More »
