I don’t know who said it but this is so true….. ‘Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other totally worn out and screaming !!!         “Whoop whoop what a ride!! I wanna go round again!!”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHELSEA

It’s Chelsea Flower Show’s 100th birthday this year but she is showing no signs of ageing.  Still my favourite time of year, this special week of May is a treasure trove of new discoveries, be they plants, designs or  accessories.  In many ways Chelsea is the London Fashion Week for garden designers – a catwalk of opportunities to show ideas and send a message to the wider world, be it political environmental or plain sentimental.  However cutting edge and innovative some hard landscaping or sculpture might be, who could ever tire of the intoxicating scent of a rose in bloom, or the beauty of … Read More »

Marigold calling!

Marigold is back – and heartfelt thanks to Cupcake for dealing with the Hangups and sourcing the best Handbags.  Where have I been? Nowhere sadly to warrant a golden tan and relaxed aura, but sometimes life just gets in the way of living and a date with a deadline took over.  It’s been a funny old year already -I am sure I am not alone in thinking we’re all just beginning to emerge from the longest winter imaginable.  Fortunately there’s been some good TV with Broadchurch and I’m loving Endeavour, but  the sun of the last few days has been the greatest joy imaginable … Read More »

OUR GIRL FRIENDS KEEP US HEALTHY

In an evening class at Stanford University the last lecture was on the mind-body connection – the relationship between stress and disease. The speaker (head of psychiatry at Stanford) said, among other things, that one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman whereas for a woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends. At first everyone laughed, but he was serious. Women connect with each other differently and provide support systems that help each other to deal with stress and … Read More »

WHAT IF…THREE WISE WOMEN

WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF, INSTEAD OF THREE WISE MEN, IT HAD BEEN THREE WISE WOMEN? THEY WOULD HAVE ASKED FOR DIRECTIONS, ARRIVED ON TIME, HELPED DELIVER THE BABY, CLEANED THE STABLE, BROUGHT PRACTICAL GIFTS, AND MADE A CASSEROLE… AND THERE WOULD BE PEACE ON EARTH.

A VICTORY FOR COMMON SENSE

At last, a victory for common sense.  Congratulations to the Home Secretary Theresa May for deciding Asperger’s sufferer Gary McKinnon will not be extradited for hacking into computers  at the Pentagon. This whole sorry story would have potentially ended in tragedy, had it not been for the brave and consistent battle put up by Gary’s mother, Janis Sharp, whose love for her son and endless courage defied the red tape, politics and beaurocracy surrounding this case. Alas, it is all too often the families of those most vulnerable in society who have to battle endlessly for justice.  Janis’ persistance will give hope to many … Read More »

TEA FOR TWO IN A CASTLE! OH YES PLEASE

amb 1

TEA FOR TWO IN A BEAUTIFUL CASTLE, AMBERLEY CASTLE TO BE EXACT… SIMPLY SPIFFING. My OH took me out for afternoon tea, it was a stunning sunny autumn day, we jumped in the car and drove off to Amberley, West Sussex, a blissful escape from work and the computer. This post is all about the pictures…words can’t capture the whole experience. A perfect venue for a romantic wedding…. Plenty of  ’hide n seek’ for the kids. Gardens are stunning. We had ‘proper’ afternoon tea with sandwiches and cakes….far to much for two of us. Scones, jam and clotted cream! Friendly chap on the way … Read More »

SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORK PLACE

SEXUAL HARASSMENT  IN THE WORK PLACE Jimmy Savile and now it is alleged Freddie Star was involved… (according to the press and we all know how reliable that is!) wow, the debate is building at a furious rate, should Sir Jimmy loose his knighthood? apparently David Cameron has hinted this could be done! why didn’t any one do something at the time, was this a given that if you worked in the world of show biz that dirty old men would cop a feel, I read Colleen Nolan had a ‘lucky escape’ thanks to her older sisters. and it seems now he defended Gary … Read More »

MY HUSBAND WANTS A DOG

My husband wants a dog.  I don’t want a dog. My husband wants a dog and says we will have to fence the garden. I don’t want a dog and I don’t want to fence the garden. My husband wants a dog and says we have to make the garden really secure, maybe make some changes. I don’t want a dog.  I’ve had dogs, and as much as I love them, they mean work.  This sounds like expensive chaos. My husband wants a dog, says we have to make the garden really safe and may have to change the terrace. The terrace?  Where is … Read More »

WHAT AM I GOING TO WATCH ON TV NOW?

What an amazing summer of television – and lets face it, how often do we ever say that? Who cared about the rain?! We started with the buzz of the Queen’s Jubilee, we galloped through documentaries with the pace of Chariots of Fire into the sublime Olympics and a whole nation united with the cheers and tears of  heroic pursuits.  No sooner had we all come down from the closing ceremony, then it was focus Paralympics, with Lucy Gannon’s ‘The Best of Men’ being one of the most informative, educational, emotional and entertaining programmes on TV this year.  Sir Jimmy Saville brought Stoke Mandeville … Read More »
