‘Too much of a good thing can be wonderful’ said Mae West. Clever girl. I thought the same when driving home from Chichester Festival Theatre a couple of nights ago.

The story goes something like this. Last year I was taken to the aforementioned theatre and posted a review on this very blogspot. So I couldn’t believe my luck when I received two invitations to the same theatre in the last month. So there I was, sitting on the back seat of my friends’ car, eager with as much anticipation as a schoolgirl newly set free from a remote boarding school on her way to the local pub, watching the beautiful rolling countryside of Sussex pass by as I headed south to Chichester.

If you haven’t been to this theatre, then a treat awaits you. Its part luvvie, part blue rinse with a healthy dose of yummy mummy and WAG thrown in for good measure. Perhaps its the time of year, but it could almost be a set for Midsomer Murders – all crumpled linen and drinkies on the lawn - is that Inspector Barnaby I see hovering next to the hospitality tent? And thats just on the outside. Inside, the theatre is inclusive and inviting but not to the extent of feeling like you are studying for your GCSE English literature exam, with stunning lighting and clearly inspired directors.

So to the productions.

The Company perform Dames

The Company perform We’re In The Money

The photographer is Johan Persson by kind permission of Chichester Festival Theatre

The first was 42nd Street. From the minute the metaphoric curtain went up – in this case, the stage floor parting to reveal a fantastically choreographed display of hands, feet and anything else my male companion’s eyes could fix on, the energy default setting was fixed on high. The cast all looked liked they were having as much fun as the audience – yes, they’re actors of course but believe me, that isn’t always the case – and the standard of dancing would have had Bruce Forsyth lost for words, and that’s no mean feat. For me there were two outstanding roles – Louise Plowright as a Broadway old timer, and Tim Flavin as Julian Marsh the director, and nothing makes you more nostalgic for the old numbers like Lullaby of Broadway and We’re in the Money than hearing them played by a magnificent live orchestra. One complaint though (well, I’m a woman after all) – I hated the wigs which I thought were deeply unflattering, especially when I caught sight of some of the hoofers on their way out later that night and they were all stunning.

It could cheapen the performance to use too many superlatives, but put quite simply, it was a great night out and one that left your feet tapping and a smile on your face long after – and the sort of evening you wouldn’t hesitate to replicate given half the chance.

And I was!

Second invitation was to Pygmalion.

Knowing Rupert Everett was in the cast was my definite idea of a Diet Coke break, and he didn’t disappoint. In fact, aside from the beard (personal preference of course), for me he almost reached full fat Coke standards. He has great stage presence, a wonderful voice well suited to the acoustics of the theatre and that terribly masculine yet petulant little boy charm that fits so well into his role as Henry Higgins. Stephanie Cole shone as his mother and Peter Eyre as Colonel Pickering had the warmth and sincerity of everyone’s favourite uncle. I loved Phil Davis as Alfred Doolitle too, and could just hear Stanley Holloway singing ‘Get me to the church on time’ every time he was on stage. Honeysuckle Weeks was a perfect Eliza with bags of character and ‘guttersnipe’ spirit which translated into elegance and charm and cut glass vowels right on cue, but she did seem very skinny. Perhaps its all that rationing on Foyle’s War….

I loved Lerner and Loewe’s musical, My Fair Lady which is based on Pygmalion and I could sense myself humming silently throughout the play, especially to ‘I could have danced all night’. But Bernard Shaw’s play has real depth and is possibly as timely today as it was when written in 1912, with the challenges women face in society combining families and careers, our changes in culture and how we measure success.

So if you find yourself in the lovely Sussex countryside and feel like some feel good fun, take a trip to Chichester for a bit of al fresco people watching and some very fine productions. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

“ everyone has a story to tell. I realise how fortunate I am to be able to publish.

I hope that people can identify with many of the things that have happened to me and I want everyone to know there is always hope at the end of the tunnel. “

Has Lynda Bellingham had an easy life…sadly in parts no she hasn’t…. but she has made the most of everything thrown at her.

She can be seen as one of the much loved panellists on Loose Women, she was on last years popular ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ She toured and was in the West End with Calender Girls and still found time to write a book.

It is a moving read, from her first sexless and loveless marriage to her second, an abusive one, but Lynda is survivor and has come out the other side with a fighting spirit, she is tenacious that’s for sure.

Her book is full of anecdotes and well known names, but you never feel she is ‘name dropping’, it has the ups and downs, a raw and intimate tale of her life, adopted in infancy she later searched and found her birth mother in Canada only to lose her to Alzheimer’s.

Her honest account of her drinking and how love third time around, Mr Spain, helped stop that pattern. Her sense of humour is always there even when at her lowest.

She is just the other side of 60yrs and looks fantastic, she tells us of her career, over 40 years in the business, she took over to play Helen wife of James Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small, has appeared in Dr Who, At Home with the Braithwaites, Second Thoughts and the spin off Faith in the Future, a stunning baddie in The Bill and for many years she was the wonderful ‘OXO Mum’ …the list is endless.

What you get at the end of this book is a story of a vulnerable and yet a very courageous woman, someone you might like to have as your mate.

LYNDA BELLINGHAM, LOST AND FOUND, MY STORY published by Ebury Books

Book review on it’s way….

Cupcake do you twitter?

No I do not twitter. I hate all that. People should get out and meet each other face to face. It makes me uncomfortable that our society values as depicted through the media and this social networking is all smoke and mirrors!

Cupcake I love black and white movies. Do you have a favourite genre of film, maybe horror or Film Noir, comedy or documentary?

I love suspense/thriller movies but probably love continental films most. Long slow shots lingering on faces and bodies. Lovely.

Cupcake What was the last thing you read?

Blue- eyed Boy by Joanne Harris

Cupcake What’s your favourite comedy TV programme, present or past?

Faith in the Future ITV starring myself and Julia Sawalha

Cupcake cosy night in or fav restaurant?

Cosy night in wins every time as I spend most of my life going out and trying to be sociable

Cupcake Although the news is generally all doom and gloom at the moment, what do you feel is man’s greatest accomplishment, so far?

Man’s greatest a accomplishment so far is to keep faith with good and try to vanquish evil

Cupcake Bath or shower?

I love a bath. All my problems get sorted in a long hot soak

Cupcake If you could only take one bottle of good wine on a desert island which would it be, red or white?

I don’t drink anymore but I do occasionally miss a glass of red wine.

Cupcake Chocolate or cheese?

Since I stopped drinking it’s chocolate! I used to love a glass of red wine and a piece of cheese so now it’s Cadbury’s milk every time.

Cupcake What would say is your most annoying habit? and best attribute?

My most annoying habit to my loved ones is always being too early for things. My best attribute is my loyalty

Cupcake Beatles or Santana ?

Beatles! They were my youth.

Cupcake What would your ’bucket list’ include? name 4 or 5 things you simply have to do before….

My bucket list would include:

Playing the perfect cameo in a big American blockbuster

Winning a BAFTA for best newcomer aged 75

Having my first real novel published

Making the top ten list with my novel

But most important of all seeing both my sons happy with their lives. If that means married with children all the better but as long as they are happy I am happy.

Cupcake What’s your signature dish in the kitchen, beans on toast or the Sunday Roast or? My signature dish is the Sunday roast and yes I make amazing gravy!

Cupcake ice cream or summer pudding?

I think ice-cream. I am never allowed it but when I do have it I am reminded how good it is

Cupcake spend or save?

I am sorry to say I have never saved a penny in my life. Once I have paid the bills the rest get spent.

Cupcake What is the best bit of advice anyone has given you?

My mother used to say when things are bad “go to sleep and when you wake up it is another day”

Cupcake do you forgive easily?

Yes I do forgive easily the first time but after that I am harder to impress

Cupcake favourite Beatle record?

My favourite Beatle record is She loves you

Cupcake gym or run

I hate Gyms and running. I did aerobics for ten years and have now moved on to Pilates

Cupcake cashmere or silk

I love cashmere trouble is it is very expensive

Cupcake What is your favourite magazine?

My favourite magazine is Vanity Fair

Cupcake Bird or beast?

I am not sure what this question means. My favourite bird is the robin and my favourite beast is a horse.

Cupcake What is your favourite pudding?

My favourite pudding is meringues and thick double cream

Cupcake Are you happier with the dresscode of smart or casual?

I am happiest dressed casually but preferably expensively in cashmere and silk I think it is much harder to dress well casually that throw on an evening dress.

This week I’m celebrating (is that the right word?) a ‘zero’ birthday. Another decade passed, and very much a time for reflection.

I’ve been thinking of all the things I’ve learnt, lost and gained over those 10 years, some silly, some scary, some sentimental. So here goes!

LOST

A much loved father and sister, a schoolfriend who was far too young, a quite frightening amount of skin tone, my womb, a favourite pair of earrings (and I’m obsessionally tidy), opportunities, a bit of weight here and there, half an inch in height, lots of ridiculous hang ups about nothing important (hurrah), money, silly money on silly clothes (why did I do it?), the thought that buying something just a teeny bit tight was a good idea and I’d definitely lose weight, a dread of technology, any respect I ever had for politicians, my very faithful dog and the desire to be in my 20′s again. (Now I just want to be in my 30′s).

GAINED

HRT! Wonderful, wonderful new family members, fabulous friends, the knowledge that nothing really matters as long as you are healthy, wrinkles (DON’T sunbathe), a bit of weight here and there, cellulite, opportunities, and hopefully the lesson to know when they are there in front of you, some grey hair but who cares as I’ve also gained a fabulous hairdresser, a huge trauma which turned into an amazing life affirming experience, a love for yoga, some bad, bad clothes purchases, love for my laptop, strong nails at last, a garden full of lavender – bliss, an unhealthy addiction to my morning coffee, some great work/career moments and A BLOG!

marigold xx

1 tbsp harissa paste
45g / 1 ½ oz / ½ cup halloumi, thinly sliced
12g / ½ oz / ¼ cup pumpkin seeds

(1) Preheat the oven to 230˚C / 450˚F / Gas Mark 8. Put the cherry tomatoes, aubergine, pepper, onion and garlic onto a large roasting tray. Drizzle the oil over the top and toss to coat. Roast for 20 mins, or until the vegetables soften. (2) Meanwhile, pour the vegetable stock over the couscous. Leave to soak under a silver foil cover for 10 mins. Then fluff up with a fork. (3) Stir the tomato purée and harissa paste through the couscous. Combine well and then pop into the oven next to the vegetables to warm through for 5 mins, while the latter finish roasting. Then remove the vegetables and couscous, set aside and preheat the grill. (4) Brush the cheese slices with a little oil and grill for 2 mins each side, or until golden brown. (5) Toss the pumpkin seeds, vegetables and couscous together in a bowl. Stir well to combine. Divide the summer couscous between two plates and top with a couple of halloumi slices.

After what seems like an age, I’m back on line, back on blog and feel like I’ve re-joined the world. How can a major computer glitch have such an impact on your life? It’s maddening, but I can’t tell you the feeling of relief and re-control I now have. I’ve been in this internet and information desert and at last I’ve found my oasis.

Firstly, big thank you’s on their way to Cupcake for holding the fort and love all her blogs. Wow, does she find out some stuff! And yes, we had an amazing time yesterday. It was one of those days when everything just flows, with conversation drifting on the lavender breeze and no pressure, no fuss and even better, can you believe the phone didn’t ring once? No, neither could I. Only problem was it had to end, but hey, another reason to make another date…

I wanted to tell you all about some amazing customer service I’ve just experience by a clothing company called Hush. If you haven’t visited their website, take a look www.hush-uk.com Fabulous easy to wear simple clothes, really good value prices and the most efficient service I’ve experienced for a long time. It makes a change, so enjoy it.

Loving this hot weather – all of you praying for rain, please don’t. It’ll be here before we know it and soggy feet in flip flops are just not fun.

marigold xx

Dominique Mosley

I am a scarf designer and have recently launched my own label- my scarves were featured in a How to Wear Guide on vogue.com.

All of my current Spring/ Summer collection was inspired by a vintage Parisian style with Art Nouveau influences (hence the names!)

I studied at Central St. Martins before specialising in printed textile design at Manchester University producing a series of digitally printed scarves for my final degree collection.
Having worked as a handbag designer previously I launched my own label in late 2009 and as you can see am obsessed with print!

My scarves are intended to Glam up any outfit and the flamboyant prints and vibrant colourways are the signature of my label.

All of the scarves have been designed, printed and hand finished in the UK and are all made from 100% silk.

RUBBISH DISPOSAL… As a nation are we teaching our kids, including teenagers, how to get rid of their rubbish!

I think not, I was parking in a supermarket car park next to a little cit saxo with three young girls inside, they were eating ‘lunch’ bought from the supermarket, as they finished one of the sandwiches they just chucked the wrapping out the window, tempted as I was to give it back to them saying something like “I think you dropped this” the ‘look could kill’ one of them gave me put me off speaking!

When I had finished my shopping I went back to my car and their car had gone… in it’s place was 3 sandwich packets, 2 crisps pks and the plastic trays from 2 salads, two plastic juice bottles, couple of chocolate bar wrappers and an empty water bottle.

So shouldn’t we be teaching kids that this is totally unacceptable behaviour, these girls looked in their early twenties, what do their parents do with all their rubbish, is this learnt by example!

On the road were we live it is also like a rubbish tip, many drivers just throw all their rubbish out of the window and it gets scattered along the path and pavement, I can fill a black sack some Monday mornings!

I know we are all trying to recycle things ( in our area we get fined if things are not put in the correct coloured bin) but to be honest it really feels it is a lost cause, if people, and I am not blaming just the young here, people would just have a little more respect for mother earth and all of our surroundings, just take the crap home for gods sake or find a bin!

It’s possible that those three young girls will one day get married/have babies and what then, will they ignore it if the baby throws rubbish out of the pram…. ‘someone else will pick it up, no big deal’.

Who will teach the valuable lessons about rubbish recycling and saving the planet.. because let’s face it that is the bigger picture here. We can’t or shouldn’t just assume someone else WILL pick it up and put it in the right place.

OK rant over… but I was very cross!

Last week I was reading a very interesting article about carbs and how to burn them off. (wallchart for gluttons) I was struck by the ‘value’ of carbs/calories of some these foods.

One sausage roll has 61 cals and yet a cream cheese/smoke salmon bagal 229 cals… found that a shocker!

I am not and have never been a carb/cal counter and was amazed ..who knew (yep bet you all did) that one mug of hot chocolate has 215 cals and yet a slice of garlic bread has 145… I do love both as it happens, but garlic bread with all that dribbling butter less than hot choc!

A Snickers bar has the same amount as one KFC chicken drum stick…guess which I am going for!

250ml Fanta Zero 8 cals, or Bucks Fizz 110 cals again NO BRAINER…

My most disappointing discovery is that a tube of Smarties has 456 cals and it’s a shame because I do love Smarties, it’s all too easy to up the tube straight into your mouth…ooops, am I the only one that does that? but a pint of beer only has 182 cals, OH very happy with that.

In the article it did list how you could burn off the offending carbs but to be honest I just got so hungry and drooled over the paper that I have no idea what they were… think ironing was involved so mentally switched off at that point.

I have now used the list as my shopping list for next week, selecting all the low carbs, it does look odd and unhealthy but it’s all very low carb! so win win.

I’m now going to buy myself one of the new Magnums with a million types of chocolate in it… think it had 10,0000 cals so may need to do ironing on a trampoline to even it all out.

Now don’t say we never share with you all, these are so scrummy and perfect for the summer, we had a little chat with Sam to find out more about her and her wonderful designs.

Cloth Magpie

Initially the concept behind Cloth Magpie arose from a desire to combine my passion for collecting vintage textiles with my skills as a handbag designer. By creating a functional object from the fabulous prints that I have hoarded over the years I feel as if I am giving them a new lease of life and almost justifying my “Magpie” tendencies.

As the brand has developed, so has my interest in textile design and I am really excited to now be designing and printing my own range of vintage inspired prints. This new element of the Cloth Magpie brand will be available for Spring Summer 2011.

History of Sam Cross

Originally from a fine art background, Sam began designing handbags in 1995. Her early collections of sculptural and decorative bags were sold through high end retailers in Cambridge, London, New York and Hong Kong and appeared in many of the well known glossies including Marie Claire, Vogue and Elle.

Her return to the industry has seen a move towards structured day bags, creating a canvas like area to display the textiles/prints and providing a refreshing alternative in this competitive market.
