Today is pancake day. It’s lent tomorrow so all the more reason to bring on the maple syrup and let your soul sing. Like sandwiches, pancakes are an excuse to let your imagination run riot and as Shrove Tuesday is but once a year, lets waive the diet and waistline and go for it. Anything goes, and go they usually do, however many you make. And don’t forget the first two or three are always messed up in the pan (cooks perks, shame to throw them away…….) Traditional I know, but I still rate lemon and sugar as my number one favourite. This would … Read More »

I love Valentine’s Day. I can say that because I’m lucky enough to have the love of a good man, but I’m well aware of the pain that can befall those who are recently bereaved, separated, those who have just never found their soul mate or live alone due to circumsance rather than choice. And the agony of loveless teenage years where Valentines Day’s come and go with no acknowledgement is immeasurable. I lived through some of those years and vowed then to be kind to myself, rather than be miserable, and started my own Valentine’s ritual. This is not a desperate measure like … Read More »

Hearing about Amanda Holden’s traumatic experiences this week following her baby daughter’s birth is a stark reminder of the potential risks in childbirth. There is a great assumption in today’s society that firstly we can all have children, and secondly, when it comes to the birth, we can choose to swim with dolphins whilst swinging from a crystal chandelier eating chocolate truffles, if that is what is going to make us happy and gives us a more meaningful experience. The most important element is the health and safety of the mother and child. Childbirth is a miraculous thing, but full of potential dangers that … Read More »

I’ve always been a fan of mirrors – not for reasons of vanity but for sheer beauty and versatility. Whatever the style, age or size, they furnish a room like nothing else, creating the feeling of light and space yet warmth and richness. Whereas once you would have to search high and low in designer furniture shops or sale rooms for something a little different, today it’s easy to find stylish mirrors to satisfy every taste and style at affordable prices. My favourite one stop shop for ideas is Graham and Green – fabulous mirrors and quirky designes to suit every style and fantasy. … Read More »

The Washington Post’s Mensa Invitational once again invited readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are the winners: 1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time. 2. Ignoranus: A person who’s both stupid and an asshole. 3. Intaxicaton: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with. 4. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly. 5. Bozone ( n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that … Read More »

It may be winter outside, but in my heart it’s spring… isn’t that a line in a song? I’m telling my vintage now! But honestly, its freezing, freezing, freezing outside and I’ve just taken this image – one perfectly bright and sunny camelia flower with its face turned towards the sun and not showing a single sign of frost, cold or mildew. I’d love to say its my green fingers but I can’t take any credit at all – this beautiful flower blooming far earlier than expected is due to our extraordinarily mild winter to date. I’ve just seen irises in full bloom in … Read More »

A lovely sunny day….. what better than to take the day off and popped down to Chichester, West Sussex with a friend and we spent some time in the Pallant House Gallery. The exhibition we both wanted to see is the EDWARD BURRA, it did not disappoint, it opened on the 35th anniversary of his death and runs until February 21st 2012. Of course you can’t take photos of the work but a gorgeous rotund tummied man said I could take a few snaps of the gallery (for this read landing) he was most helpful and rather lovely, he had an overwhelming passion for … Read More »

Whitewash Christmas We’ve dusted down our winter coats, set our watches to Strictly O’clock and said goodbye to our summer. There’s a faint smell of nutmeg and cinnamon around, shops and car parks are beginning to throb and I’ve even spotted Santa. This is the time of year to draw the curtains early, throw on another layer and settle down to an evening of TV with comfort cooking and a good book, and feel safe in the age defying properties of low lighting and candles and the knowledge that there is at least 6 months before summer dresses show the signs of an excess … Read More »

Marigold got me thinking, it was when she was talking about the winter warmers and the last few days of summer…. inspired by a weekend in the country and my trusty camera here is my take on the natures rich bounty waiting just rip for the picking… Apples galore… even the windfalls were fab. The crumble in the oven…aroma drifting through the house, add the fresh picked blackberries, win win Marigold is right when she talks about curling up with Downton Abbey in these autumnal evenings… great after a long walk, kicking drifts of leaves like a over zealous child in wellies… Someone worked … Read More »
